DSM shop fit by Tom Finch

17-11-2009 15:51 # 1 comments - add your comment

b Store opened the utilitarian project entitled “10 for DSM” at Dover Street Market this week, with a purpose built shop fit by frequent creative collaborator and recent architectural graduate TOM FINCH.

The idea behind the concept was to complement and enforce the uniformity of the exclusive range produced by b Store for Dover Street Market. Tom describes the space as “an interpretation of the work of architects, primarily early modernists such as Mies Van Der Rohe”. Similarly, Jan De Cock, the artist whom designed the existing interior on the second floor of Dover Street Market where the b Store concept is situated, also cites Van Der Rohe as being heavily influential in his work. The concept results in two complementary facets that can be read as two clearly distinctive elements.

Back and Forth, by Anna Kleberg

22-10-2009 14:26 # add your comment

B-Store presents a version of Swedish artist Anna Kleberg’s new installation Back and Forth including photography, film and objects that simultaneously is on show at Andréhn- Schiptjenko gallery, Stockholm.

The starting point for Back and Forth was the actual space of the artist’s studio, Kleberg’s interest in the shifting nature of the photographic medium and thoughts about the creative process itself. The film and sequential photographs are based on a woman holding, balancing and being surrounded by boxes, paper and other materials from the studio.

Anna Kleberg’s show with B-store is the first presentation of her work in the UK. It is a collaboration with an unconventional space for art where exciting and unpredicted ideas and meetings can happen.

Anna Kleberg graduated from University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm in 1998 among her selected exhibitions are Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm, Uppsala Art Museum, Kulturhuset Stockholm, Malmö Art Museum, Galerie Ilka Bree, Bordeaux and Sharjah International Biennial.

Elsa Tierney & Raimund Berthold joint exhibition, b Store, London

03-08-2009 13:22 # add your comment

b Store welcomed artist Elsa Tierney and menswear designer Raimund Berthold to the store this July for a joint exhibition, presenting Tierney’s Meta Morphosis installation and marking the launch of Berthold’s capsule collection of transformational outerwear. Find out more about the joint exhibition here.

Metamorphosis - an installation by Elsa Tierney

The theme metamorphosis is the point of change and mutation taking place after periods of repetition. The theme derives from an early performance piece where the artist Elsa Tierney, dressed up as a shadow puppet and filmed herself doing a series of repetitive movements.

The results was the realisation that the shadow character was no longer a 2 dimensional puppet controlled by the ties of strings pulling her, but instead a fully independent artist in her own right.

This change was the stage of metamorphosis and is heavily influenced by stories the artist has read along similar themes of change, such as Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm and most recently Kafka’s Die Verwandlung (Metamorphosis), in which the character Gregor Samsa changes into a cockroach.

Elsa’s work continues to be influenced by the theme of change, ultimately sprouting out of periods of repetition or reoccurrence, into forms that are new and different. Her work also encompasses a strong psychological aspect as the artist delves deeper into her subconscious. Using recognisable objects such as the milk bottle, the typewriter and the cockroach and mixing them with occurrences like the casting of shadows, repetition and sudden change, the artist presents a pictorial story of her own in which the puppet comes to life, cutting the ties that bind her with her shadow, an action to which her shadow is not impressed.

Berthold by Raimund Berthold

Austrian-born, London-based Central St Martins graduate Raimund Berthold has launched his debut eponymous collection of outerwear for men under the label BERTHOLD. It is a capsule range that is quirky yet classic, functional but with a sense of humour, seemingly straightforward but with hidden depths. It is a unique design collection of outerwear that cunningly changes from a coat to a bag and back again with consummate ease.

The collection comprises five pieces which are sporty, lightweight and comfortable, using modern fabrications that are perfect for the British weather. These include a double breasted car coat which converts into a duffle bag, and an oversized round neck windcheater that changes into a ‘shopper’. There is also a rain-cape, but with sleeves whose integral back ‘pocket’ turns into a simple square bag with back straps and a gilet which flips inside out to create a mesh shoulder bag as well as a loose fitting overcoat.

“I had an idea that it would be fun to reinvent the ‘pac-a-mac’. I loved its design and practicality and envisaged expanding this theme into a collection of men’s outerwear in interesting, weather resistant fabrics, and all with their own integrated bag” comments Berthold. He continues “on a recent trip to St Petersburg, I was really aware of the colours and shapes that hints at this beautiful city’s former communist past. The prevalence of Stalinist architecture in urban hues and the sharp angles and communist ‘blocks’ is one of the main references of my collection. I also noticed the clothing on the Russian streets; it is very utilitarian in colour and style, oversized and free from defined shape - even the women wear their coats large and formless but emphasized shoulders, almost in tribute to the ‘80’s.”

Freakscape

London-based Philip Smiley's installation "Freakscape" draws inspiration from his rural upbringing in Virginia. Philip explores the curiosity and carelessness of youth set in a mysterious environment of surreal wilderness.

Incorporating a variety of media including illustration, sculpture and found objects, Philip aims to convey the feeling of ever encroaching nature over what appears to be an innocent, and perhaps naive, scene.

Philip Smiley has been a freelance illustrator since graduating with an MA from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1999. He has designed graphics & illustrated for many major fashion labels (Burberry, Commes des Garcons, Stella McCartney). His work has also been featured in publications including Dazed & Confused, Spin, Blackbook and books such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

He currently lives in London. During the opening, live performance by musician **K will create psychedelic soundscapes as soundtrack for the installation.

Pipework, by Dean Edmonds

29-04-2009 15:00 # 2 comments - add your comment

b Store is pleased to present an exhibition by furniture designer Dean Edmonds.

Having graduated from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design in 2008, Edmonds has found inspiration in the everyday and mundane - objects which are usually overlooked - leading to ‘many over excited trips around the local builder’s merchants’.

His style could be described as ‘make-shift’ with items unfolding, leaning and often having an un-fussy, stripped-down aesthetic. Edmonds enjoys products that appear to make the ordinary and over-looked more interesting through combining materials or putting them in an un-familiar context.

Following this theme b Store will be showcasing Pipe Work, a series of works inspired by the domestic pipes and conduits which run through our homes and under our feet. Edmonds is ‘fascinated’ by these networks:

‘These wonderful systems are constructed from rather honest and simple materials that we seem to take for granted. Copper plumbing is of particular interest to me, with the various fittings that are available and it’s soft malleable qualities’.

Pipe Work uses this in-expensive system of pipes and fittings alongside steel, to create something playful and unique, whilst celebrating the basic qualities of the copper piping.

The installation launches on 7th May and runs to 8th June.
